Okay, so I went for a drive with a couple friends and one of them talked about finding a candle that actually smelled like the first snowfall of the winter. I was thinking about what she said (blazed of course) and I thought, We have all kinds of different mediums to express art visually, physically, and of the audible variety. But why not an art form reliant on smell? I thought that the candle was as good of a representation of a snowfall as a painting or a photograph. Imagine, Artists (smellogrophists if you will) creating smells that express an emotion or tell a story. Anyone agree?

isn't that what you would call people who make perfume?

haha I thought about that but i figured, when was the last time a perfume/cologne connected with you on a deep emotional level? Perfume makers would be the art equivalent of an emo kid taking a picture of themselves with the camera above their head.

I guess it depends on whether you're a perfume connoisseur. You're not going to think about perfumes critically unless you were taught to do so. And if you wanna teach the art of smells then you are going to have to use perfumes as subject matter.

pretty sure that's what true perfumers (is that what they're called?) are trying to do, as well as people who make candles. ever smell someone wearing a perfume and think of something? or just go out perfume shopping and smell them from the bottle, i'm sure you'll have a memory tied to at least one of the scents. smells bring back memories like no other

Genius. I might have to make something like that now. Even simple details like adding the ocean mist smell to a painting of a beach would add a whole new dimension to art.
